Picture it...Sicily, 19--no, not really. It was in Maryland back in 2013 actually. Owner of The Uptown Vegan, Drea Smith was at a dinner party with some girlfriends. There was wine, seafood pasta and a highly anticipated dessert: sweet potato cake. Drea was 'commissioned' by her friends to make the now infamous cake and the rest, as they say, is history!
From that day, Drea was encouraged by her friends to consider making cakes as a way to generate extra income. What started out as a 3 flavor cupcake only offering grew into the business as it stands today. Taking her business vegan in mid 2015, the focus became making the best tasting vegan treats around and redefining people's perception of what vegan food tastes like.
A native New Yorker, Drea was born and raised in The Bronx and grew up learning baking secrets from her grandmothers, Albertha and Lela. She takes what she learned from them and pours it all into every order. If you ask her the secret ingredient to making her cakes and cookies sooo delicious, you'll get a one word response: Love.
Drea currently resides in New York City with her son who is happy to help his mom with her business...by taste testing!
